Jake, as they say, there&#8217;s more than one way to skin a cat. We both simply report on what has worked best for us and the people we work with. 
Neil&#8217;s approach works really well for him. Mine works really well for me. That&#8217;s all there is to it.

Neil is an experienced writer, he can write 1 high quality article in like 2 hours. And more importantly, he already knows how to promote his content. If you can write like him, his approach might works.
However, most of us can&#8217;t. That&#8217;s why it&#8217;s not a good idea to publish lots of content.

Your buddy Neil Patel is a huge proponent of publishing a ton of content. In fact his new case study to make $100,000/m with a health site he&#8217;s trying to get 2 blog posts per day each being over 1000 words each.
Neil is super successful with what he does, yet you conflict with his advice&#8230;

Hey Chris, Yes, absolutely. But as you found, the people that do respond make the process well worth it.

Brian &#8211; This approach definitely works. Sure, you will send many emails that don&#8217;t get responded to (even after following up), but you will get people who are genuinely interested in finding out more about your post.
I&#8217;ve had good success so far with positive feedback resulting in some social shares, asked to be part of expert roundups, and even for quotes to use in guides/research they are putting together. As you mentioned there are not a lot of links back to my content (however it is still early in the process).
I&#8217;m not too familiar with SellHack, I&#8217;ll be checking it out.

Since following Backlinko I&#8217;ve been spending more time on content promotion but these tips will certainly help &#8211; one mistake I&#8217;ve made is in trying to get links from sites that are never going to reply to me. Ones such as eHow that you advise getting rid of in step 1. Now I see why!
To add one more thing &#8211; I&#8217;ve found that following up on outreach emails can be beneficial. On several occasions I&#8217;ve sent a follow up when I had no reply, and the recipient either didn&#8217;t see my first message or forgot to reply. And often these follow ups have turned into links. Definitely worth following up 🙂

Thanks Samuel. Good call on the phone replies. The easier it is to get someone to say &#8220;yes&#8221;, the more replies you&#8217;ll get. And the feeler email definitely fits the bill.

Good stuff Brian. The feeler or quick touch base email is a great idea you executed perfectly. I also find it pretty successful as a first email to someone I never emailed before. It&#8217;s low friction as much as possible, and often folks will answer right away on their phone like in your examples.
Content promotion is so important to do it right and START with research, thanks for promoting this!

Sandra, that&#8217;s something worth testing. In my experience the feeler email works best.

I agree that it&#8217;s worth testing with the link vs without. I&#8217;ve had a ton of people reach out to me over the years, and when they include a link I will usually at least check it out to see if it&#8217;s something I&#8217;m interested in sharing. I personally find it frustrating when there is no link included, because it wastes more of my time to reply first and ask them to send me the link. But, as Brian pointed out, there is more than one way to skin a cat, so what works for some may be completely different than what works for others.
I think it is also beneficial to build a bit of a relationship with an influencer via social media or blog comments before doing the email outreach, that way when you do send that initial e-mail the person will already be somewhat familiar with you. That&#8217;s definitely been helpful for me when reaching out to others, and when people contact me, I do appreciate it when I&#8217;ve already interacted with them elsewhere.

Now that we have a growing list of people who share our content, it becomes easier to go back to those people the next time. Kind of a waterfall effect. 
As you say in the video, it&#8217;s important to segment your contact list. Then send topical content only to people you know are interested in the topic.

After session #2 of the training series, I used your email outreach tip. I knew you&#8217;d only share your email script now, but I took a chance since I had lots of success when I asked tons of experts to be a part of an expert roundup for my blog.
I wrote a &#8216;Feeler&#8217; email and sent it to three influential bloggers. It was a non-pushy email saying how I loved their blogs and leaving my link there so they could tell me what they thought about it. (I stated the link in the first email to burn some exit points. I thought the less I bother them, the better.)
Only one person answered but did not share it.
I made two mistakes here: I used one of those bloggers&#8217; site form (couldn&#8217;t find his email address) and I don&#8217;t think he had that much interested on my topic &#8212; the expert roundup post about paid ads/paid traffic. 🙂 That person was actually you, my friend Brian. 🙂 I don&#8217;t mind, this is what the trial-process is for.

You&#8217;re welcome, John. I&#8217;ve seen content promo work great for ecommerce sites. Like any website, you need to add some quality content to your ecommerce site. A site with 100% product pages isn&#8217;t going to rank in 2015.

I too have an ecommerce shop and am struggling big time with traffic so I&#8217;ve diversified and have started selling on Etsy as our products are designed and create by us. 
It&#8217;s been going really well as the buyers are already there. We&#8217;ve actually been inundated with orders which proves that our products are good it&#8217;s just a small matter of getting eyeballs on them 🙂 I&#8217;m also going to sell on Amazon handmade when it launches later this year. I&#8217;m just letting you know this as these marketplaces might be an option for you too. 
In saying that I still want to build our site as this what we control. Etsy can shut us down any time and I don&#8217;t like anybody having that kind of control over my business. So next step for me is to develop a content strategy. 
I LOVE Brian&#8217;s stuff as it&#8217;s specific and actionable and I will be trying out the content roadshow techniques. I just have to find some time first to brainstorm topics and create useful content stylish mums and dads would be interested in. Time is hard to come by these days between juggling a day job, a two year old, housework, making the actual products and now writing content and marketing. Who needs sleep right?!

Two things: 
1) Creating a list of prospects is a great idea. However, if promoting a SECOND piece of content, the same person might come up on the list in the first 7 Google search results.
If you&#8217;re someone who receives the same template email, does it matter? Or would you suggest changing up the email after establishing a relationship with that person?
2) Another alternative for SellHack is pipl.com (although SellHack looks pretty good). 🙂

The key is to create something worth linking to&#8230;and go from there.
But if 100% of your site is selling hotels, it&#8217;s going to be really hard to build links and rank.

I love your emails Brian. However as hard as I try, so many can not be applied to my market. First 7 pages for atlantic city hotels were 99 % sites like mine&#8211; selling hotels. Or same for vacations etc .

 I&#8217;ve had reasonable success in promoting content.. including a really good influential website offering a guest post. The hardest parts for me were first up, sending out those initial emails (wondering what kind of response I&#8217;d get back).. luckily everyone seemed to really like the content (I went skyscraper on the article &#8211; took me over 20 hours to put together). Secondly I&#8217;ve found it hard to find many people to contact.. I managed to scrape together a list of 80-odd but wondered if you had any additional tips for finding influential people? Most of the traffic from the promotion has come from Twitter.. the main problem I have with tools is the cost (I have a single website that doesn&#8217;t make money so I can&#8217;t afford $99/mth for Moz etc.)

Thank you for the detailed outreach scripts and for the handy to follow worksheet.
Both will help simplify my content roadshow process in that I can focus on author email and article URL instead of thinking about all different variables that might not matter as much for outreach. Even if it&#8217;s a big institution&#8217;s website, the person writing and posting content is pulling the trigger anyway.
This is especially helpful for me because I am in the addiction recovery space, so my outreach &#8220;avatars&#8221; might include a hospital, a person in recovery, family of people in recovery, recovery sites about specific addictions, religious or educational institutions, &#8220;resource&#8221; organizations, etc&#8230; I&#8217;ve begun mining just for one specific addiction and it&#8217;s incredible how much diversity and activity there is online and offline. 
So focusing just on that contact info and short outreach emails is great for me right now.

Second, with content promotion, bloggers can focus their energy on creating quality contents not on quantity. 
Sure there are many ways to rank a site but so far after reading tons articles on seo, your technique, in my opinion and in my belief, gave the clear answer to what blogging is all about.

Hey Brian! Thanks for sharing new tips and your advices, I must say promotion is very important, found that after publishing an article using the skyscaper technique, even the content was great, it didn&#8217;t received too much attention. 
What about the promotion of affiliate sites? Let&#8217;s say most sites on first page are promoting same products as you, they won&#8217;t just give you a link.

Hey Paul, that&#8217;s why it&#8217;s important to never rely on a single technique. When you have an arsenal of techniques, you can use the best one that will work best in that particular situation.

I have a question Brian, how does the road show link building strategy work together with the skyscraper method?
Because usually when I promote new content I would choose to use the Skyscraper method which I&#8217;ve had great success with (even when the prospects did not link out to other websites in their content, and even when my post subject did not have a proven track record).
So considering that, when would you use the content road show over the skyscraper method?

Thanks Lucian. I agree: social shares don&#8217;t directly impact SEO. But social shares get more eyeballs on your content, which can lead to links. Plus, when you have lots of shares on a post, it makes people more likely to link (thanks to social proof).

As I understand it, there is inconclusive evidence whether social shares on facebook or twitter have any impact on SEO.
With that said, with the content roadshow strategy, many of the people I&#8217;ve contacted are willing to share on their facebook, but not on their blog. Do you have strategies to get them to offer a link instead of a share?

Venkat, you&#8217;re welcome. It depends on how close of a competitor they are. You&#8217;d be surprised how many &#8220;competitors&#8221; are happy to share cool stuff.

Paul, you&#8217;re overthinking it. I&#8217;ve had plenty of competitors share my content across several different industries. Give it a try and see how it goes.

How do you work around competing sites in a small niche? Say for example, in the niche where you offer guitar lessons. How do you get competing sites that offer the same stuff to promote your content? 
If someone in a competing website were to ask me to promote his article on learning to play the guitar when I am running a similar site to teach people how to play, I would simply dump his email. 
From a business perspective, it doesn&#8217;t make sense and yet, these are the authoritative people that I need to get content out to.

I think that another way for finding some of the email addresses could be to subscribe to the blog you found. Many times the &#8220;from&#8221; address on newsletters or emails they send you is their address, so I think it would be a good idea to check it also. 
Do you think it could make sense?

There&#8217;s a small percentage of people like that. There&#8217;s also a small percentage of people who never share anything. Another group that deletes emails from people they don&#8217;t know. Etc.
I don&#8217;t worry about that. I just focus on how to get more people to share my content while building strategic business relationships at the same time.

Got a question for ya:
What percentage of people would you say are hesitant to share your link/content because they are afraid they may lose their readers/subscribers to your blog? 
For example, if i wrote (what I thought) was an awesome CRO Techniques Guide. Had maybe 50 tips, well organized, promoted it, and it&#8217;s on the 1st page of Google now&#8230; maybe number 4. Now you ask me to share your link, and I see your content is way more in depth, better design and overall user experience. Wouldn&#8217;t I be hesitant to share your link with my audience for fear I may lose some of them?

Hi Allie, I&#8217;ve used this strategy for years. And surprisingly, my conversion rate hasn&#8217;t bumped up much since Backlinko has grown.

It probably helps that a LOT of people know your name in the &#8220;SEO copywriting&#8221; world. Would be interesting to see the statistics for when before you were famous! Haha =D

I am very impressed with your succinct content and your presentation style. 
The site (4 years in the making) is nearly ready to be promoted&#8230;! 
The &#8220;influencers&#8221; in my niche have opinions on the subject that range from oppostion to my points of view, to agreeing somewhat &#8230; but with different emphases. So I am not likely to get wholehearted support, however my novel angle on the topic is important to my audience &#8211; otherwise I wouldn&#8217;t have bothered making the site. 
I wonder if you have tips on how to &#8220;soften&#8221; a message, like &#8220;I think you&#8217;ll agree with most of my content, but if this is thought-provoking for you perhaps it is something others you know would like to comment on. You might like it since it will probably generate some vigorous debate on your blog&#8221; 
I know that is leading a bit, but in your opinion is it too much? I am trying to plumb the motivation of the influential bloggers, (eg generating more correspondence from others?) so that they are more likely to swallow something that is not entirely to their palate&#8230;

I&#8217;ve been following you for a few weeks now and I really like your approach. Very interesting video. Just like you&#8217;ve mentioned, I have read elsewhere how important it is to have influential bloggers in your nice publish your content to get more traffic to your site. 
My question is, are these bloggers willing to share content from newbies, like me? How does it benefit them? I mean, I would only think they would be willing to share if it benefits them. 
Do you recommend establishing some kind of relationship with them before asking to share the content or just sending the e-mail, like you suggest in the video? 
I have found those influential people in my niche. Unlike other travel blogs, mine provides useful information as to how to take the best pictures (postcard types of photos) of the top capitals of the world. The blog is in Spanish, by the way. So I have been following some of the top Spanish travel related blogs. I will follow your advice and see what happens.

I think this is the way to do it, but if you are selling a product like I do: comics, you first have to start publishing great content about for example the artists or the writers AND the content has to be very good, befor you can actually pratice the content road show&#8230; phew, that is a lot of work 🙂
